Mit aussergewöhnlich kurzem Vorlauf hatte AMD erst gestern die Veröffentlichung seiner neuen Z 60-SoC (System on a Chip) für Tablets und Hybride angekündigt, nun ist die Katze aus dem Sack. Wenig verwunderlich für AMD/ATi soll sich bei der für Windows 8 vorgesehenen Plattform wieder die Leistung im grafischen Bereich verbessert haben. Besonders der geringe Stromverbrauch bis runter auf vier bis fünf Watt weiß zu überzeugen.
Bei so geringer Stromaufnahme gleichzeitig Verbesserungen im grafischen Bereich zu versprechen, wäre natürlich Blödsinn, denn selbstverständlich verbraucht auch die als “Hondo” erwartete Plattform mehr Strom je anspruchsvoller die Aufgaben sind. Dennoch erreiche man mit Windows 8 im Präsentationsmodus locker die 10 Stunden Marke, heißt es in der Pressemitteilung, wenn auch nicht sicher ist, was das für den Alltagsbetrieb bedeutet.
Die geringe Leistungsaufnahme begünstigt aber wohl die Bauform, denn durch die geringe Größe des Bausteins könnten auch die anderen Chips und Teile “dünner als 1 Zentimeter” sein, wie engadget berichtet. Somit dürften die Z 60 SoC-Module von AMD zu Weihnachten in diversen Windows Tablets angeboten werden, doch ein genaues Datum ist noch nicht bekannt. Ob sich diese Systeme dann auch “Surface” nennen dürfen, wie die Windows Tablets von Microsoft ja heißen werden, darüber wird noch spekuliert.
Trotzdem man mit der neuen Z 60 Hardware mit einer Auflösung von bis zu 1920 x 1200 (auf externen Displays) bzw. 1024 x 768 bei so anspruchsvollen Titeln wie Call of Duty: MW2 spielen kann, empfiehlt AMD bei Videos die 720p-Auflösung. Das ist insofern etwas verwunderlich, als das ja auch das Videoschauen teil der zu beurteilenden Grafikleistung ist. Die bei Spielen bessere Leistung dürfte aber aus der DirectX 11-Unterstützung kommen, die auf Videos keinen Einfluss hat.
Wie bei AMD üblich wird man aber mit einem preislich sehr konkurrenzfähigen System rechnen können. Ob dies dann überzeugt oder enttäuscht hängt nicht zuletzt von den Erwartungen der Kunden ab. Einen Desktop wird man damit wohl nicht ersetzen können.
